Pearl Harbour was bombed in Dec. of 1941, and the U.S. became increasingly fearful of an attack on the mainland. One month later, gas masks were distributed to civilians. These didn’t fit children so well and were not a prospect for a 4 year old, so the Sun Rubber Company created a mask that was smaller, recognizable, and supposedly less scary for a child to wear…supposedly.
